Vandanmedu is a village in the higher ranges of the Western Ghats mountains, located in the Idukki district of Kerala. Rugged mountains and dense forests cover much of the surrounding countryside, making the area ideal for wildlife viewing, trekking, and fishing. The region's climate and soil conditions make it the largest producer of cardamom in the world
British planters were the first to recognize the potential for commercial cultivation of cardamom, coffee, and pepper in the region. Later, entrepreneurial planters from the lower ranges and neighboring areas of Tamil Nadu ventured into plantations.
Anamudi, the highest peak in India south of the Himalayas, along with thirteen other peaks in the district, exceeds a height of 2,000 meters. The Periyar, Thodupuzhayar, and Thalayar are the major rivers flowing through the district.
